Security in Papua New Guinea seems to be one of the major concerns of all new visitors to the region. This discussion page has been setup so that you can air your thoughts and hear back from others who have gone before you.

[edit] Port Moresby

Port Moresby is not a particularly safe place (neither is New York or Chicago or some parts of Sydney for that matter), but it is not a war zone either as is often portrayed in forums online. It's safe enough in most parts during the day, but I would have to say, I don't venture out at night on foot.

All the visitors facilities like hotels and airports have security and your as safe as anywhere else in the world at those locations. Port Moresby though has little to attract the tourist and people rarely stay more than one night anyway unless there on business.

[edit] Milne Bay

Security in the Milne Bay region is a completely different matter. Although this region does suffer from opportunistic theft from time to time, that's about it. From a tourists prespective, I feel completely safe walking around there day and night and have never felt threatened in any way.
